Managing contractor safety is one of the most challenging aspects of safety management. It is now accepted that contractors are more vulnerable to safety risks than other categories of workers. There are a number of reasons for this. They are typically unfamiliar with the working environment they find themselves in. They may also be unfamiliar with work activities that may be taking place at the workplace that have the potential to impact their work. Some contractors may be reluctant to raise safety concerns. Indeed, the very nature of the contractual relationship may at times place pressure on the contractor in relation to completion of the work with the resources available rather than the resources required. Notwithstanding this, businesses that engage contractors must ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the health and safety of those contractors. This book is concerned with the practical strategies for achieving this duty.

The book forms part of a series of books focusing on safety duties in practice. Other books in the series include:
  • Working at Heights
  • Mental Health
  • Electrical Safety
  • Plant Safety
  • Managing Asbestos in the Workplace
